The mill is not running yet. What follows is not a record of results — it is the set of rules we will work to once we start milling.
How we will work

A moisture check on every intake
Moisture is measured on each raw-material consignment as it arrives. Damp grain grows mould.

Aflatoxin screening
Maize and oilseed cake are screened before they go into the mix.

Batch traceability
Every bag is recorded against the batch it came from, so a problem can be traced backwards.

Scales calibrated on schedule
Scales are calibrated at set intervals so that a 50 kg bag leaves the mill weighing 50 kg.

Dry storage
Raw materials and finished feed sit on pallets, off the floor and away from the walls.
What is aflatoxin?
Aflatoxin is a poison produced by mould growing on grain. Usually you cannot see it, and it may have no smell. Feed can look fine and still carry it.
What it does to your birds
- Growth slows — birds eat but do not gain.
- Egg production falls.
- Birds become less able to fight off disease.
- In bad cases it kills them.
What to look for in any bag of feed
- Smell: if it smells mouldy or stale, do not buy it.
- Colour: green, black or white specks are a warning.
- Touch: damp feed, or feed caked hard, is a problem.
- The bag: be careful with torn or damp bags, or bags stored on bare ground.
- Your store: keep feed somewhere dry with moving air, on wood or a pallet. Do not hold it for months.
